Stand Up for Living Wages for All Working People
All working people should be able to support their families on a living wage. But one institution, Vanderbilt University, stubbornly refuses to pay its workers a living wage even though the university president enjoys a salary of $1.2 million a year!
The unsung heroes that keep the doors of this institution open - groundskeepers, custodians and food services workers, among others - can't afford even the basic necessities for themselves or their families. This tragic situation affects not only the workers, but also their children, neighbors, and the communities they live in.
Despite having an overall budget of $2.2 billion dollars, the university won't back down from its inhumane policies. In fact, according to The New York Times a worker was forced into a homeless shelter because she couldn't make ends meet on her Vanderbilt wages!
We need to keep up the pressure until all workers earn a living wage. Tell the Vanderbilt Trustees that America's workers and their families must be treated with fairness and dignity. Tell them to pay living wages now!
Dear Vanderbilt Trustees,
How much longer will workers at Vanderbilt go without a living wage? As a trustee of the university, you have a duty to ensure that it's workers are treated with fairness and dignity.
As Martin Luther King, Jr said:
"Equality means dignity. And dignity demands a job and a paycheck that lasts through the week."
Vanderbilt isn't ensuring that its lowest paid workers are able to meet their basic living expenses despite its $2.2 billion budget and compensation for the university president of $1.2 million. In December, the New York Times reported about a worker who was forced to go to a homeless shelter because she couldn't make ends meet on her Vanderbilt wages.
