Call on President Bush to break Big Oils stranglehold on energy policy and cut Americas dependence on oil by 2.5 million barrels a day within 10 years.
With every passing day, our last wild places are threatened by rampant oil development, and our planets fragile web of life continually unravels from the impacts of global warming. President Bush has the power to slow this destruction through vehicle fuel efficiency, supporting the production of alternative fuel sources, and enforcing of the Clean Air Act.
Send a message to the President: the American people demand that we reduce our dangerous dependence on oil!
Mr. President, you have admitted that America is addicted to oil, but you have failed to use your executive power to help America kick the oil habit. I call on you to move America beyond oil by taking the following steps immediately:
- Announce your strong support in Congress for the Vehicle and Fuel Choices for American Security Act, which would cut our nation's oil dependence by 2.5 million barrels a day within 10 years -- more than we currently import daily from the Persian Gulf.
- Order your Department of Transportation to improve the fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks -- the cleanest, fastest, and cheapest way to reduce oil consumption.
- Order your Department of Energy to issue loan guarantees to refineries that produce clean and renewable cellulosic ethanol - made from plant material -- which has the potential to virtually eliminate the use of gasoline.
- Order all federal agencies to purchase only hybrid and/or flexible fuel vehicles with the best fuel economy and run all their vehicles capable of it only on E-85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline).
- Order your Department of Interior to stop its headlong rush to open Greater Yellowstone, the Western Arctic Reserve and other irreplaceable wild places to drilling that will only prolong our oil addiction and senselessly destroy our natural heritage.
- Order your Environmental Protection Agency to use the Clean Air Act to set carbon dioxide standards for power plants -- the nation's largest source of global warming pollution.
