Restore Funding to Fight the Global AIDS Epidemic

Everyone has the right to a decent life, and the doors of opportunity should remain open to all. But for more than 34 million children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, the chance for a decent life has been stolen away.

Ask your Representative to give the innocent victims of the AIDS epidemic as second chance!

At the last G8 conference, the United States made a promise to lead the fight to end the AIDS epidemic. Since then, the Child Survival and Health Programs Fund which provides basic education in developing countries, has been cut by $136 million. Congress is withholding $100 million in funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. And more than $100 million dedicated to to alleviating poverty has been chopped away.

The orphans of the AIDS epidemic have been robbed of their families, and without our help, have little chance to live a decent life. So help make sure the doors of opportunity remain open for these victims by ensuring the United States keeps its promise.

Tell Congress to restore life-saving funding for the victims of the AIDS epidemic!

Top many people around the world are suffering from the AIDS epidemic. And the children of the world are being hit the hardest.

Today, there are 15 million orphaned children due to HIV/AIDS, 90% of whom live in Africa. In sub Saharan Africa, 1 in 6 children are orphaned because of HIV/AIDS, and that figure is expected to reach 1 in 3 by the year 2010. Tuberculosis is the biggest killer of people living with AIDS, yet the United States' bilateral anti-tuberculosis program is small.

That is why I am concerned about the budget for AIDS and other health programs, particularly the funding cuts to the Child Survival and Health Programs Fund and the Global AIDS Fund. The Global Fund is the world's leading mechanism in the fight to battle AIDS, and provides two-thirds of all TB funding. It also provides more than half of all financing to address malaria, a major killer of children, in addition to one quarter of all donor HIV/AIDS spending.

Last year, at the G8 Summit, the United States promised the world that we would lead the fight to end the global AIDS epidemic, and I urge you to restore funding to life-saving foreign assistance programs.

Sincerely,
