No More Handouts to Big Oil – Stop Arctic Refuge Drilling

  • by: Care2
  • recipient: Senate
While polar bears approach "endangered" status and weÂ’re paying over $3/gallon at the pump, oil companies should be last in line when it comes to government handouts.

But, if the Senate passes the "American-Made Energy and Good Jobs Act," passed by the House of Representatives on May 25, 2006, we will help Big Oil at the expense of our last pristine wildlife refuge and all American taxpayers.

Despite a desperate need to develop alternative energy and reduce our dependence on oil, 2005Â’s energy bill granted the oil industry tax breaks that Senator Wyden (D-OR) conservatively estimates to be worth $2.6 billion. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge only increases our oil dependence and profits for oil companies at the expense of our wildlife and environment!Tell your Senator to oppose any attempt to drill in the Arctic Refuge, and to start supporting energy technologies that protect our wildlife and decrease our reliance on oil.

The bill to drill is on the Senate calendar and they could vote any day. Please send your letter now!
Please oppose the "American-Made Energy and Good Jobs Act," passed by the House of Representatives on May 25, 2006. Instead of supporting drilling in Alaska’s National Wildlife Refuge, Congress should support alternative energy technologies that reduce pollution, global warming gases, and costs to Americans. We can create new jobs that not only help protect imperiled wildlife like polar bears, caribou, and our economy, but also our national security.

For the past several years, drilling supporters have tried to achieve their misguided aims through nearly every back door imaginable. Ultimately, Congress has rightly rejected drilling in the Arctic Refuge again and again. Now is the time to look toward clean energy solutions for the future and cut ourselves free from oil dependence.

Any legislation that puts the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge at risk is a step backward for America and you should reject it. Instead, please focus your attention on energy solutions that protect our environment, our economy, and our national security.
